    British Columbia is in the middle of a housing crisis. People are spending their whole paycheque just to keep a roof over their head.

    Many stay in bad housing situations because they can’t afford a big rent increase that comes with moving into a new place.

  • Make B.C. an affordable place to live

    Together we can fix the problem. We have a plan:

    • Municipal governments must start using their zoning and permitting powers to demand 50% of all new density created from upzoning is affordable.

    • The Province must bring in new regulations to support cities, and give them the power to raise funds for affordable housing by capturing the true value of land.

    The cost of housing, both from rent and mortgages, is rising faster than wages. Added to that, personal debt, including high interest debt from credit cards, is adding to make life more unaffordable.

    Money laundering and lax regulation led to massive real estate speculation, with financial institutions over lending and driving up the price of rent and mortgages so they could make more in interest payments.

    Municipal governments have given away billions in value to private landowners and speculators by agreeing to upzoning and permits with little to no public benefit.

*Affordable: This tool uses a definition of affordability as spending no more than 30% of your monthly income on rent.
